CHILDREN'S CARNIVAL - 2026 -
Celebrating 70 years of tradition and culture
The Red Cross Children’s Carnival proudly celebrates its 70th Anniversary in 2026, marking seven decades of creativity, culture, and compassion. Established in 1956 under the patronage of Lady Isabella Beetham, the event began as a modest charity show in aid of the Red Cross. Today, it stands as Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest and most enduring children’s Carnival celebration, and the only Children’s Carnival stage show of its kind, held annually at the Queen’s Park Savannah.
For 70 years, the show has provided a national platform for young masqueraders, from babes in arms to teenagers, to shine on stage. Generations of families have participated as designers, bandleaders, volunteers, and proud supporters, passing on traditions of craftsmanship, storytelling, and artistic excellence.
What distinguishes the Red Cross Children’s Carnival is its commitment to meaningful mas. While adult Carnival has evolved over time, children’s mas has consistently preserved the art of narrative costume design. Young masqueraders bring folklore, history, environmental themes, and imaginative stories to life through intricate portrayals. The show has maintained high standards of presentation, judging, and production, earning its reputation as the premier children’s Carnival showcase in the nation.
The 70th Anniversary is more than a milestone. It is a celebration of resilience. The event has endured economic shifts, public health challenges, and changing cultural landscapes. It adapted during the COVID 19 pandemic with innovative initiatives such as the V65 Emerging Designers Competition, ensuring that the future of mas remained secure. That spirit of innovation continues to define the show today.
Importantly, the Red Cross Children’s Carnival has always served a humanitarian purpose. Proceeds from the event support the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society’s community services, including emergency relief, first aid training, and assistance to vulnerable families Historical Background of RCCC. Every costume, every band, and every ticket purchased contributes to strengthening communities across the country.
As the Red Cross Children’s Carnival celebrates 70 years in 2026, it honors the pioneers who built the foundation, the generations of children who brought the stage to life, and the volunteers who sustain it. It remains a celebration of heritage, youth empowerment, and national pride. Seventy years on, the show continues to blend culture with compassion, ensuring that Carnival not only entertains, but also makes a lasting difference.

In 2021, the V65 was birthed, bringing Culture, Creativity, Design, Carnival, and Children full circle. This event has been said to be a great avenue to see the creativity of Carnival look towards children's mas. The V65 was established as one of those pathways to secure the future of mas and establish that pathway through our young people.
V65 Emerging Designers Competition
The V65 Challenge required youth between the ages of 7 to 21 to submit their design virtually, using guidelines set out by the RCCC Organizing Committee, separated into 3 categories Ages 7 - 12 , 13 - 17 and 18 - 21.
After submission of the participant’s preliminary designs and first round judging, the semi-finalists take part in interactive sessions with various presentations on aspects of design by many local Carnival Pioneers and Contemporaries in the industry, all masters in their fields.
The Challenge progresses into the final round with finalists, upgrading their submissions and building their design on miniature dolls (finale of season 1) then to actual costumes (finale of season 2).
