On the side of Humanity- World Red Cross & Red Crescent Day TTRCS

Statement by the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society (TTRCS) on World Red Cross Day – May 8th 2025

Happy World Red Cross Day!   Today, we join our global Red Cross and Red Crescent family in celebrating the power of humanity and the enduring spirit of volunteerism. The focus of this year’s celebration is - On the Side of Humanity!

Today is a day to reflect on our mission, acknowledge the incredible work being done, and look ahead to the future of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society.

I am filled with immense pride at the remarkable journey the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society has undertaken over the past five years. This period has been one of significant growth, marked by endless achievements that have profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals and communities across Trinidad and Tobago. It is because of the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, staff, and partners, that we have expanded our footprint, diversified our programmes, and deepened our reach in communities.

While we have many notable achievements to which we can point, some of our biggest to date include:

-            Development of the Humanitarian Academy for Training and Research

-            Acquisition of another EU Grant to address the Human Rights of Migrants

-            Development of the Community Resilience Group Model and its success.

-            Digitalisation of the RCS to enhance operations.

-            Diversification of our income model & establishment of Red Korner Cuisine.

This growth has not been accidental. It directly results from our commitment to strong principles that underscore the importance of good governance, robust organisational policies, and best practices.

We have also faced many internal and external challenges on the path to this point; a fractured system, no completed audits in eight years, a global pandemic and major flooding across the country. We were not daunted by these challenges but rather rose to the occasion as they strengthened our resolve to do better and be better.

I am pleased to say that we have completed our financial audits up to 2020 with 2021 in progress with a projected completion date of June 30th, 2025

Transparency, good governance and a robust organisational framework are critical pillars upon which The Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society must stand. As we have progressed through our transformation, we leverage best global practices to develop robust organisational policies that guide our operational framework. By taking this approach, we will successfully navigate the complex challenges and ensure that our resources are utilised effectively and transparently. Transparency with our stakeholders is the bedrock upon which our credibility and effectiveness is built.

Looking ahead, a key focus for the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society must be the strategic investment in our youth. Our young people are not just the future; they are the present. We already benefit from their fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and boundless energy. Continuing to invest in their development by providing them with opportunities for leadership, training, and meaningful engagement, is crucial for building a stronger, more dynamic organisation that is equipped to face the evolving needs of our society. Empowering our youth today ensures the sustainability and continued relevance of the Red Cross for generations to come.

Furthermore, we recognise the vital role our community resilience groups play in strengthening the fabric of our society. These groups, embedded within communities, are the frontline of our disaster preparedness and response efforts. Investing in their capacity and providing them with the necessary resources and training, are paramount to building communities that can withstand and recover from crises. Their strength is our strength, and their preparedness is the key to minimising the impact of emergencies.

As we look towards the future, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society is entering a period of transition. The upcoming elections scheduled for August 2025 represent a significant step in our journey, a moment to embrace the next generation of leadership. This transition is not about replacing what has been built, but about building upon it. It is about ensuring a smooth and effective handover, guided by the principles of good governance and a shared vision for the future. It is about empowering new leaders who will bring their unique skills and perspectives to continue the growth and sustainability of the TTRCS, ensuring that our vital work continues to thrive.

Today, on World Red Cross Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. Let us celebrate the incredible contributions of our volunteers and staff. And let us look forward with optimism and determination to a future where the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society, guided by strong governance, empowered youth, and resilient communities, continues to be a beacon of hope and a force for good in Trinidad & Tobago.

Yours in Humanity

Jill De Bourg
